Downwinding isn’t just kitesurfing; it’s a very unique way of moving along the coastline. Instead of looping back to the same beach or fighting the wind, you surrender to it, traveling for kilometers, carving waves, jumping sandbanks, and crossing river mouths... It’s the closest feeling to freeriding in the mountains—a pure, linear flow where the adrenaline comes from the unpredictability of the elements and the unknown of exploration.
Our Downwind Explore trips are designed for one thing: the adventure of a lifetime. Built for skilled, independent riders who crave distance and discovery, this is not a static beach holiday—it’s a nomadic journey. Over 12 immersive nights, we cover 20 to 60 kilometers per day, gliding with the trade winds north along some of the most spectacular coastlines on Earth. We move constantly to unlock new beaches, hidden lagoons, and remote islands that most tourists never see.
Overview
You’ll experience the diversity of Brazil’s Northeast: flat water glitches, rolling ocean swells, wild dunes, and dense mangroves. We’ll cross rivers, sleep in secluded fishing villages, and refuel on fresh coconut water and grilled fish right on the sand.
Conditions can be rough, the distances long, and the terrain unpredictable. You need to be comfortable handling your kite in gusty winds, riding waves, and managing your gear in open water.
It’s raw, authentic, and deeply rewarding. You’ll share the road with a small group of like-minded adventurers, united by a love for the wind and a desire to see what’s around the next bend.

Our accommodation strategy blends comfort and authentic immersion. We stay in well-rated kite resorts and pousadas with private rooms and local charm whenever possible, ensuring you’re rested and close to the launch zones. However, the magic of the Explore trip lies in reaching remote fishing villages where “roughing it” is part of the adventure. In these spots, expect a true “roots” experience—simple, clean rooms, cold showers, and the sound of waves outside your window—just like locals live it.

Trip Breakdown
When embarking on a Downwind Explore trip, we must acknowledge that the wind and tides ultimately dictate our path. This makes it hard to come up with a fixed plan, especially since the goal is to provide a tailored experience, which means touching base with the team constantly to realign routes based on conditions. In general, though, you can expect a dynamic and focused atmosphere, where we ride far and fast, but also rest well and share knowledge and stories over meals.
When you arrive, our team will be at Fortaleza Airport to greet you and drive you to our initial launch spot. We start the first day with a sunrise warm-up to shake off jet lag, followed by a comprehensive briefing using visual aids to review the route and safety protocols.
Mornings start with a strategy session over coffee, analyzing wind forecasts and tide charts. Then we jump in the water, crossing river mouths, navigating mangroves, and riding swells that stretch for kilometers. Throughout the day, we stop for fresh coconut water and local snacks. Lunch might be a quick bite on a sandbank or a feast at a rustic beach shack.
A dedicated media specialist travels with the group, capturing every session with high-resolution cameras and drones. From cinematic aerial shots of the group carving down the coastline to action close-ups of your best rides, we document the entire journey so you can focus on riding. By the end of the expedition, you’ll receive a comprehensive package of edited videos and photos, giving you a professional souvenir of your Brazilian downwind adventure.
You are never alone out there. For groups of 5 or more, two experienced guides will be on the water with you at all times. Our support vehicle follows the coastline wherever accessible, carrying spare gear, water, and first aid supplies, remaining in constant touch with our guides via radio. Because we ride in dynamic environments, hazards like rocks or even marine life (turtles are common!) can appear, so wearing a helmet is recommended, while an impact vest is mandatory.
Each day concludes with a group debrief where we discuss what worked (and what didn’t) and adjust the next day’s plan based on your feedback and weather models. This is also when we review photos, swap gear tips, and enjoy the camaraderie that forms when a group embarks on an adventure this intense. Then, it’s dinner and down time, ensuring you’re rested for the following session.

Then, we’ll hop on a quick call to discuss your experience and answer any questions you might have. Once confirmed, you pay a deposit to secure your spot and start getting ready!
